Our Story

Started as a hobby. Turned into something more.

Richard didn’t set out to start a business. He picked up leather-working as a way to slow down - to step away from the noise and work with his hands. What started as a way to relax quickly became a passion. And what started as gifts for the people he loved quietly became CamelBack Leather Goods.

How it started

A hobby that got out of hand—in the best possible way

Leather-working started for Richard the way the best things do: quietly, and for no particular reason other than curiosity. He wanted something to do with his hands after a long day. Something tactile. Something that required focus and rewarded patience.

He started small- a wallet here, a keychain there. Nothing fancy. But as he got better, the pieces got more refined. He began making gifts for family and friends: wallets for birthday presents, personalized keychains for graduation, custom clutches for the people he cared about.

He heard it enough times that he started to believe it. In 2023 CamelBack Leather Goods was born- named for the mountain that defines the Arizona skyline, built on the same values Richard brought to every gift he ever made:quality material, real craftsmanship, and something personal in every piece.

“You should open a business.”

-What family and friends kept telling Richard

Made by hand, not machine

Every cut, every stitch, every burnished edge is done by Richard personally. It takes longer-and it worth it. You can feel the difference the moment you hold it.

What we stand for

Why handmade matters

Built to last a lifetime

Full-grain leather is the strongest, most durable cut. It doesn’t peel or crack- it ages. It developes a patina. It tells your story the longer you carry it.

When you order from CamelBack, you’re talking to Richard directly. No middlemen, no customer service queues- just a maker who genuinely cares about what goes out the door.

Personal from start to finish

The Craft

What goes into every piece

Richard uses full-grain leather for every project- the outermost, strongest layer of the hide. Paired with waxed thread and hand- set hardware, every piece is built to take a beating and look better for it.

The stitching is done by hand using a saddle stitch- two needles, one thread, pulled tight from both sides. It’s slower than a machine, and far stronger: if one stitch breaks, the rest hold. Thats the standard Richard builds to.
